PORTA SAN FRANCESCO

La porta sorge in una posizione diversa rispetto alla precedente, dopo le distruzioni apportate per la costruzione del cinquecentesco bastione. La porta, ad arco a tutto sesto, è fiancheggiata da due nicchie laterali che permettono il passaggio pedonale. Costruita in blocchi di travertino resi in bugnato, ha nella chiave di volta esterna lo stemma di Pio IV. Uscendo dalla porta, sul lato sinistro, fu collocata l’immagine di San Francesco, genuflesso, nell’atto di pregare e sotto questo rilievo trovano posto le insegne di Torquato Conti con l’iscrizione che ricorda il motto del condottiero Fulgor non terret. / Torq(uatus) de / Comitibus / preside. Egli fu incaricato dal papa Pio IV della realizzazione dei bastioni cinquecenteschi che si inseriscono nelle mura cittadine.

SAINT FRANCIS GATE

It closes the path the monumental Saint FrancisGate. This is in a different location than the previous one, after the destruction made for the construction of the sixteenth-century bastion. The door is flanked by two side niches that allow pedestrian access. Built in blocks of travertine made in ashlar, it has the key of Pius IV to outer crest. Leaving the door, on the left side, it was placed the image of Saint Francis, kneeling, in prayer and in this survey are placed insignia of Torquato Conti with the inscription that recalls the motto of the leader:Fulgor not terret. / Torq(uatus) de / Comitibus / preside. He was appointed by Pope Pius IV of the realization of the bastions that fit into the city walls.
